| Abstract | Traditional medicine consists of materials or mixtures of materials derived from plants, animals, minerals, extracts, or combinations thereof. One of the plants widely used in traditional medicine is mangosteen (Garcinia mangostana L.). Mangosteen pericarp is known to contain xanthone compounds, including α-mangosteen, which exhibits biological activities such as antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, anticancer and antimicrobial effects. This study is aimed to identify the functional groups of xanthones and determine the antioxidant activity of mangosteen pericarp supplement products by using Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) and UV-Vis spectrophotometry. Xanthone identification in mangosteen pericarp supplement products was performed using FTIR spectrophotometry, while antioxidant activity was analyzed using the 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) method with UV-Visible spectrophotometry. The FTIR analysis showed that all three mangosteen pericarp supplement products (Samples A, B and C) contained xanthones, as evidenced by the clearly identified O–H, aromatic C=C and C–O functional groups, whereas the C=O functional group was not clearly identified. The antioxidant activity test showed that the IC₅₀ values of Samples A, B and C were 7.65 ppm, 6.33 ppm and 7.45 ppm, respectively. Based on the results, it can be concluded that all three mangosteen pericarp supplement products contain functional groups indicative of the presence of xanthone compounds and all samples exhibited very strong antioxidant activity, with Sample B showing the highest antioxidant activity due to having the lowest IC₅₀ value.
