| Abstract | Physical food contamination is one of the major food safety issues that may occur due to the presence of foreign objects in food during food processing and serving. One of the factors contributing to physical food contamination is the personal hygiene of food handlers. This study aimed to determine the relationship between food handlers' personal hygiene and the risk of physical food contamination among street food vendors around Cadika Park, Medan Johor District, in 2026. This study employed a quantitative analytical observational design using a cross-sectional approach. The study population consisted of all 40 street food vendors selling food and beverages around Cadika Park, Medan Johor District. The sample included all 40 vendors selected using the total sampling technique. Data were collected using an observation checklist and analyzed through univariate analysis and bivariate analysis using Fisher's Exact Test. The results showed that 27 respondents (67.5%) had good personal hygiene, while 13 respondents (32.5%) were categorized as having poor personal hygiene. Furthermore, 34 food products (85.0%) were classified as having no risk of physical contamination, whereas 6 food products (15.0%) were classified as being at risk. Fisher's Exact Test yielded a p-value of 0.010 (p < 0.05), indicating a statistically significant relationship between food handlers' personal hygiene and the risk of physical food contamination among street food vendors around Cadika Park, Medan Johor District, in 2026. This study concluded that better personal hygiene practices among food handlers were associated with a lower risk of physical food contamination, thereby contributing to improved food safety and consumer health. | 1 |
