| Abstract | Tofu industry wastewater contains high concentrations of organic matter that increase Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD) and Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD), potentially causing environmental pollution. This study is aimed to determine the effectiveness of combining water lettuce (Pistia stratiotes) and giant salvinia (Salvinia molesta) in reducing BOD and COD levels in wastewater from the Putri Deli Tofu Industry. A quantitative descriptive study with a pretest–posttest approach was conducted using 20 liters of wastewater collected through the grab sampling technique. Phytoremediation was carried out for 2, 4, and 6 days using a combination of both aquatic plants. BOD and COD analyses were performed at the Public Health Laboratory Center (BLKM) Medan, and the data were analyzed descriptively based on concentration changes and percentage reductions. The initial BOD and COD concentrations were 240 mg/L and 720 mg/L, respectively. After treatment, BOD decreased to 70 mg/L (70.8%), 69 mg/L (71.3%), and 54 mg/L (77.5%) on days 2, 4, and 6, respectively. COD decreased to 200 mg/L (72.2%), 188 mg/L (73.9%), and 160 mg/L (77.8%) over the same periods. All post-treatment results met the wastewater quality standards for soybean processing industries. It was concluded that the combination of water lettuce and giant salvinia effectively reduced BOD and COD levels, with the highest efficiency achieved after 6 days of phytoremediation. | 1 |
