| Abstract | Free radicals contribute to skin damage and premature aging; thus, antioxidants are necessary to inhibit the oxidation process. Asoka flowers (Ixora coccinea L.) contain secondary metabolites, including flavonoids and phenolics, which demonstrate potential antioxidant activity. However, the application of Asoka flower extract in face mist formulations has not been extensively investigated. This study formulated an ethanolic extract of Asoka flowers (Ixora coccinea L.) as a face mist, determined its antioxidant activity using IC₅₀ values, evaluated the physical quality of the formulation, and statistically compared its characteristics with those of commercially available products. The experimental design involved extracting Asoka flowers via maceration with 96% ethanol and formulating face mists with extract concentrations of 5% (F1), 10% (F2), and 20% (F3). The formulations were assessed for organoleptic properties, homogeneity, pH, viscosity, spray spread ability, drying time, and hedonic acceptance. Antioxidant activity was measured using the DPPH method with a UV-Vis spectrophotometer, and data were analyzed using One-Way ANOVA and the Tukey HSD test. The Asoka flower extract was successfully incorporated into face mists that satisfied physical quality standards. The extract exhibited an IC₅₀ value of 10.9 µg/ml. The IC₅₀ values for the F1, F2, and F3 face mist formulations were 1.14 µg/ml, 2.83 µg/mL, and 48.7 µg/ml, respectively, all classified as having "very strong" antioxidant activity. Statistical analysis indicated significant differences (p<0.05) in pH, viscosity, and spread ability, while drying time and hedonic test results did not differ significantly (p>0.05). These findings demonstrate that the ethanolic extract of Asoka flowers (Ixora coccinea L.) can be formulated into a face mist that meets physical quality requirements and exhibits very strong antioxidant activity, supporting its potential as an antioxidant cosmetic product for skin care. | 1 |
