| Abstract | ABSTRACT with Kristanti, Alya Gladys. Formulation and Antibacterial Activity of a Deodorant Spray Containing Ethanolic Extract of Mangosteen Peel (Garcinia mangostana L.) Potassium Aluminum Sulfate as an Antiperspirant Against Staphylococcus aureus. In 2026. Thesis of the Department of Pharmacy, Faculty of Pharmacy, Deli Husada Deli Tua Health Institute. (Supervised by: apt. Sulasmi, S.Farm., M.K.M., M.Farm) Bromhidrosis or body odor is a condition caused by the activity of bacteria on the skin surface during increased sweat production particularly Staphylococcus aureus. One approach to controlling body odor is the use of deodorant sprays containing antibacterial and antiperspirant agents. Mangosteen peel (Garcinia mangostana L.) contains bioactive compounds including alkaloids, flavonoids, tannins, and saponins which exhibit antibacterial properties, while potassium aluminum sulfate (alum) functions as an antiperspirant. This study aimed to determine the effect of varying concentrations of potassium aluminum sulfate in a deodorant spray formulation containing ethanolic extract of mangosteen peel (Garcinia mangostana L.) on the physical characteristics of the preparation, antibacterial activity and antiperspirant effectiveness. The method used in this study is experimental, the deodorant spray was formulated with a fixed concentration of 30% ethanolic extract of mangosteen peel and varying concentrations of potassium aluminum sulfate, F1 (2.5%), F2 (5%), and F3 (7.5%). The formulations were evaluated for organoleptic properties, homogeneity, pH, viscosity, spray pattern, drying time, antibacterial activity using the disc diffusion method, irritation, antiperspirant activity and hedonic acceptance. The results showed that all formulations met the required physical evaluation standards and did not cause skin irritation. F3 (7.5%) exhibited the strongest antibacterial activity, with a mean inhibition zone diameter of 15.5 mm, and demonstrated the highest antiperspirant effectiveness, with a mean reduction in sweat volume of 28.85% and received the highest preference score from the panelists. The conclusion of this study is that increasing the concentration of potassium aluminum sulfate affects the physical characteristics of the formulation, antibacterial activity and antiperspirant effectiveness. The suggestion in this study is that future studies evaluate the effects of the formulation on fabrics to determine the residu left on clothing after application.
