| Abstract | Chronic sinusitis is a respiratory tract infection commonly associated with Staphylococcus aureus. The prolonged use of antibiotics may increase the risk of bacterial resistance; therefore, alternative therapies derived from natural products are needed. Cinnamon bark (Cinnamomum burmannii) contains various bioactive compounds with potential antibacterial activity. This study aimed to formulate ethanolic cinnamon bark extract into a nasal spray dosage form, evaluate its physical quality, and determine its antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus. This experimental laboratory study used ethanolic cinnamon bark extract obtained by maceration with 96% ethanol. The extract was formulated into three nasal spray formulations with different concentrations and evaluated for organoleptic properties, homogeneity, pH, viscosity, spray performance, and antibacterial activity using the disc diffusion method. The data were analyzed using One-Way ANOVA. The results showed that all formulations met the required physical quality parameters and exhibited antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus. Statistical analysis demonstrated a significant difference among the treatment groups (p<0.05) with a significance value of 0.000. Formula 3 containing 50% ethanolic cinnamon bark extract produced the largest inhibition zone and was the most effective formulation. Therefore, ethanolic cinnamon bark extract (Cinnamomum burmannii) has the potential to be developed as an antibacterial nasal spray preparation for the management of chronic sinusitis. | 1 |
